Publishing Your Story

A Series is a collection of episodes that belong to the same story. Series are used for ongoing or serialized content, where new episodes are released over time.

Creating a Series allows readers to follow your story, receive updates when new episodes are published, and discover your work on the platform.

If you want to publish a standalone comic instead, you can also publish it as a One-Shot (explained below).

When to Use a Series vs a One-Shot

Sumugi supports two main ways to publish your work.

Series

Use a Series when you want to publish:

  • An ongoing story
  • Multiple episodes set in the same world
  • Serialized content released over time

Readers can follow a Series and return for future episodes.

One-Shot

A One-Shot is a standalone comic that is not part of a larger series.

This format works well for:

  • Short stories
  • Experiments or test comics
  • Bonus content
  • Announcements or special posts

One-Shots appear in the Stories feed rather than inside a Series.

Creating a Series

Follow these steps to create your first Series.

  • Go to the Series tab in Files View.
  • Click Create Series.
  • Enter the basic details for your series, such as:
    • Title
    • Description
    • Cover image
  • Save your series to create the series page.

You can update these details later as your project evolves.

Adding Episodes to a Series

Episodes are created by exporting a completed Editor File and adding it to your Series.

  • Open your Editor File.
  • Export the project once your panels and layout are finished.
  • Go to your Series page.
  • Add the exported file as a new episode.

You can continue adding episodes over time as you create more content.

Publishing Your Series

Once your episode is ready:

  • Add the exported episode to your Series.
  • Review the episode details.
  • Click Publish to make it visible to readers.

You can also save your series or episodes as Drafts while you continue working.

Tips for Starting a Series

Start small!

Your first episode doesn’t need to be long. Many creators begin with a short introduction or a small scene.

Consistency matters

Readers are more likely to follow a series that updates regularly, even if the episodes are short.

Use a clear cover and description

Your series cover and description help readers decide whether to start your story.

Publishing a One-Shot

One-Shots are standalone stories that live in their own feed on Sumugi. They’re ideal for short stories, experiments, or self-contained comics that don’t require a full series.

How to Publish a One-Shot

You can publish a One-Shot in two ways:

  • From the Stories Tab
    • Navigate to the Stories tab, where all One-Shots are displayed.
    • Click the Post button at the top of the page.
    • Fill in the required details: title, description, category tags, content rating, and upload a custom thumbnail.
    • Click Publish to post your One-Shot.
  • From the Export Menu
    • After finishing your comic, click the Export button in the Editor.
    • Choose Publish as One-Shot (or export normally / add to a Series if preferred).
    • Complete the same fields: title, description, category tags, content rating, and thumbnail.
    • Click Publish to post your story directly to the One-Shot feed.

Tips

  • One-Shots can be drafted before publishing, so you can polish your story or cover image before it goes live.
  • They appear in the dedicated One-Shot feed, making it easy for readers to discover standalone content.
  • Use One-Shots for short experiments, mini-arcs, or testing new ideas without committing to a full series.
